A Care_full Gesture is an iterative exhibition which turns attention to street rubbish. In the lead-up to the show, Kirralee walks the surrounds of an art space to procure discarded materials. Each collected item undergoes methodologies akin to heritage conservation practices including documentation, visual inspection, cleaning, repair, and bespoke mounting or storage. Kirralee then presents the objects in the art space as if they were highly valuable items. This provides a new life and an alternative context for the trash, allowing for speculative considerations regarding their materiality and purpose.
A Care_full Gesture public program: Trash Walk
Participants engaged in a rubbish collection surrounding Wreckers Art Space, removing waste materials from the ground and placing them either into a council bin or keeping for further treatment and investigation. Following the walk, participants were guided by Kirralee in a mindful cleaning process and engaged in discussions about care cycles, material hierarchies, waste culture and conservation practices.
All photographs of the public program were taken by Lee Wilkes.
